Day Trips from Matera

Matera has worthwhile trips in several directions, but they are not interchangeable. Alberobello is across the regional border in Puglia; Craco and Metaponto are in Basilicata. The coast is not part of Matera itself: the Ionian beaches around Metaponto require a separate road journey.

Good to know: Read “from Matera” literally. Many feed offers visit Matera from Bari, Lecce or Alberobello and belong to those cities, while the trips here should begin in Matera. Combining Alberobello with several Itria Valley towns makes a long vehicle-heavy day; a private transfer buys flexibility, not a shorter road.

Frequently asked questions

What is Matera best known for?

For the Sassi cave districts and the rock churches on both sides of the Gravina gorge. Together with the Murgia plateau they form the UNESCO World Heritage property. The bookable core is guided Sassi walks, cave-house and church visits, panoramic rides and park excursions.

Does Matera have a beach?

No. Matera is inland and has no beach or harbour. Metaponto on the Ionian coast is about 47 km away and roughly 50 minutes by car in free-flowing traffic. A beach day is a separate excursion, not something reached on foot from the Sassi.

How long does the bus from Bari airport take?

Current direct shuttle timetables allow about 1 hour 15 minutes between Bari airport and central Matera. Services do not run continuously, so check the timetable against your flight rather than assuming there will be an immediate connection.

Do I need a car in Matera?

Not for the Sassi: they are best explored on foot, and restricted-traffic zones make driving into the historic area a poor plan. A car becomes useful for Craco, Metaponto and rural Basilicata. Park outside the restricted centre and confirm access with your accommodation.

Is Craco an easy day trip?

By car, Craco is about 60 km and roughly 55 minutes from Matera. The abandoned old settlement cannot simply be explored alone; visits are controlled. Public transport takes much longer, so a guided trip or a car is the realistic option.

Are the Sassi accessible for wheelchairs or pushchairs?

Only in parts. Matera has steep slopes, uneven stone and many stairs. Panoramic vehicles reduce walking but do not make every church or cave accessible. Ask the specific operator and accommodation to confirm the exact route before booking.
