Murgia Materana Park Tours

The Murgia Materana is the limestone plateau opposite the Sassi, across the Gravina gorge. Its value is the landscape together with prehistoric sites, shepherd tracks and rock churches. It is not a city park with paved loops: sun, exposed rock and uneven paths change what counts as an easy walk.

Good to know: The Belvedere can be reached by road, while hikes that descend into the ravine or cross the suspension bridge demand more time and suitable footwear. Shade is scarce in summer. Check the meeting point and transfer: “Matera” in a title does not always mean the walk starts in the old town.

Frequently asked questions

What is Matera best known for?

For the Sassi cave districts and the rock churches on both sides of the Gravina gorge. Together with the Murgia plateau they form the UNESCO World Heritage property. The bookable core is guided Sassi walks, cave-house and church visits, panoramic rides and park excursions.

Does Matera have a beach?

No. Matera is inland and has no beach or harbour. Metaponto on the Ionian coast is about 47 km away and roughly 50 minutes by car in free-flowing traffic. A beach day is a separate excursion, not something reached on foot from the Sassi.

How long does the bus from Bari airport take?

Current direct shuttle timetables allow about 1 hour 15 minutes between Bari airport and central Matera. Services do not run continuously, so check the timetable against your flight rather than assuming there will be an immediate connection.

Do I need a car in Matera?

Not for the Sassi: they are best explored on foot, and restricted-traffic zones make driving into the historic area a poor plan. A car becomes useful for Craco, Metaponto and rural Basilicata. Park outside the restricted centre and confirm access with your accommodation.

Is Craco an easy day trip?

By car, Craco is about 60 km and roughly 55 minutes from Matera. The abandoned old settlement cannot simply be explored alone; visits are controlled. Public transport takes much longer, so a guided trip or a car is the realistic option.

Are the Sassi accessible for wheelchairs or pushchairs?

Only in parts. Matera has steep slopes, uneven stone and many stairs. Panoramic vehicles reduce walking but do not make every church or cave accessible. Ask the specific operator and accommodation to confirm the exact route before booking.
