Casa Grotta and underground Matera: what is worth entering?

Updated October 25, 2026 · 5 min read

Warmly lit rock-cut chamber with rough limestone walls and a narrow passage

Matera’s underground sights are not interchangeable. A Casa Grotta explains domestic life, a cistern explains water, a rupestrian church explains worship, and a larger hypogeum shows how several underground functions connect. Choose by question, not by the word “cave”.

Start with a cave dwelling

A furnished Casa Grotta is the most immediate first interior. In one compact room you can understand sleeping, food storage, tools and the proximity of people and animals. It works particularly well after a guide has explained how rooms extend behind built façades.

One house is usually enough. Visiting several similar reconstructions adds less than pairing one dwelling with a church or cistern. The leading Sassi walks often include a cave house, so check your tour before buying a separate ticket.

What an underground complex adds

The underground Sassi visit with audio guide covers a stated 400 square metres and combines a church, wine cellar and cisterns. It starts at €6 in the current data and uses an audio guide in ten languages. That combination makes it more than another domestic room.

The separate MateraSotterranea entry focuses on restored hypogeum rooms, tunnels and rock-cut dwellings. It is useful in bad weather or when you prefer a self-paced visit, but confirm stairs, surfaces and last admission. “Underground” should never be assumed to mean step-free.

Do not confuse atmosphere with age

Soft lighting and bare rock make every chamber feel ancient. The useful questions are what the space did, what is original, what has been reconstructed and which historical period the interpretation covers. UNESCO’s significance lies in a settlement adapted to terrain over millennia, not in a claim that every visible room has the same date.

A sensible combination

For a first day, combine one Casa Grotta, one rock church and one water or hypogeum site. If your Matera city tour already includes the first two, add the underground audio visit rather than another furnished house. Allow time above ground too: the relationship between roof, lane, façade and cavity is the real story.

Our pick for independent visitors is the underground audio-guide visit because it joins several uses in one compact stop. Its limit is interpretation without conversation; travellers who learn by asking questions will get more from a guided Sassi walk.
