Car hire in Matera: what do excess, deposit and desk extras mean?
Updated October 26, 2026 · 5 min read
Compare the rental conditions, not only the daily price. The excess is the amount for which the contract can leave you responsible after covered damage; the deposit is money or card credit blocked at collection. They are related, but they are not the same charge. In Matera, the correct figure is whichever one appears in the conditions of your chosen car and supplier.

Excess and CDW
CDW limits liability for specified damage under the rental agreement, subject to exclusions and an excess. It does not mean that every panel, tyre, glass item, key or mistake is automatically covered. Read the exclusions and the procedure for reporting damage before paying.
Extra protection sold by a booking platform can operate as reimbursement: the rental company may still block a deposit and charge you first, after which you submit documents for a claim. Cover sold at the desk is a different contract. Neither should be described as “zero risk” without reading its terms.
What the deposit does
The supplier can use a security deposit for the excess and for items such as fuel or tolls. Discover Cars states that the physical card used for the deposit must be in the main driver’s name; an additional driver cannot leave it instead. Check whether the supplier accepts your card type and whether the available credit is sufficient. Do this before travelling, not at the counter.
The release is not the same as the moment the balance reappears: processing can depend on the supplier and bank. Because amounts vary by deal, any article quoting one universal Matera deposit would be misleading.
Extras that alter a cheap quote
Open the rental conditions and check the young-driver rule, additional-driver fee, child seat, late collection, one-way return and cross-border permission. Add only the items you actually need, but price them before selecting the cheapest car. A late flight can make a limited desk schedule more important than a small saving.
Fuel wording also matters. “Full to full” means returning the car at the agreed level; it does not excuse you from documenting the gauge. Photograph the vehicle, existing marks, mileage and fuel reading at collection and return, and keep the final paperwork.
Matera-specific planning
A rental does not buy access to the Sassi. Arrange a legal car park outside restricted historic streets and ask the accommodation how luggage drop-off works. If the car will sit unused during a two-night city stay, compare collecting it later with paying for parking and rental days.
Our recommendation is to filter for a practical pick-up point, then compare the excess, deposit and fuel policy line by line. Decline or buy extras only after you understand what the base agreement already includes.
